On Wednesday October 8th, Rooftop Cinema leaves its usual premises and moves to cinema Sõprus to bring you a truly exceptional cinematic experience that offers a unique look at the social and political history of 20th century Europe through popular culture. Ladies and gentleman, it’s the Ball (Le Bal) by legendary Italian filmmaker Ettore Scola.

Set in a Parisian dance hall, Ball features no narrative, and no dialogue. Moving from one dance number to the next, the film travels in time and fashions as the music reflects the political and cultural tenor of the day – from the Popular Front of 1936 to the German Occupation of World War II, on to the breezy openness of the post-war era and the open rebellion and turmoil of May 1968, and finally closing in the early 1980s disco craze.

Ball was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlinale, and was chosen as the best film of the year by both French and Italian film academies.

The event starts at 7 pm with a short intro talk about the uniqueness of the film and Ettore Scola.
